Song: China Shop

Artist: The Romanovs (formerly known as Morgan and the Hidden Hands)

Album: …and the Moon was Hungry

Hello everyone!

This is my first post on The Auditory, so hopefully it’ll cater to your musicial curiosities and introduce (whatever that means). This is a lovely little piece by the gruop, The Romanovs. This is a lovely little group. It’s difficult to peg this group with a genre, but it feels like a classically trained cabaret group. The instrumentations for the group are vocals, drums, piano, cello, violin and bass. The feel is really quite sensual.

The song is really quite lovely. I really want you to be the judge of what it’s about, but I will say the ensemble plays together quite well. The balance is quite lovely throughout.

I think this is a pertinent group to post as the “contemporary classical” guy because this is really a good show of what happens when classically trained musicians take hold of other forms of music. Everyone in the group is classically trained in one way or another (Morgan’s voice has a spectacular range!).

Give this a listen, and I’d love to hear back from you about anything that you read or listen to! I’m always open to discussion about pretty much anything.

Looking forward to more in depth looks at modern art music!
