In the past week we have been graced with announcements from orchestras and their upcoming seasons as well as the Grammys (the most noble of annual musical announcements). Last week the New York Philharmonic released it’s 2011-2012 season. Many people have noted the fact that there is not a single performance of a composition written by a female composer. I forget: When was the last time the Phil even premiered a piece by a female composer? 2007?
Despite Jennifer Higdon recently receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Music, her neo-romantic masterpiece ‘Violin Concerto’, recorded last year by Hilary Hahn, was snubbed by most of the major orchestras throughout the country. Where was her Grammy nomination? I guess it went to Lady Gaga…
It appears that these orchestras, the NY Phil and LA Phil, are still stuck in their old ways and, for the most part, are still trying to appeal to their older and more faithful patrons to bring in the cash. The image of having fresh young faces is one thing, but to make a statement through performance is another. Both Gilbert and Dudamel have certainly made musical statements in their respective inaugural seasons, but their progressive tendencies were a little off the mark.
