Four Tet are not a band that I have listened to much in the past, but they are a band that I have had to listen to people telling me to listen to. Many times. So I finally caved into the pressure and downloaded a copy of Kieran Hebden’s most recent effort, There Is Love In You and have since listened to it about 73 times. This track, Circling, is my favourite from that album. What I like so much about it is that, despite having released 4 solo records previously and re-mixed however many hundreds of tracks, his music remains so understated. The sparsity of the drum-beat and the subtle layering of eery sound after eery sound means it ends up sounding like some kind of Reichian minimalism, or perhaps one of those tracks that they play over and over again in the science museum but that you hardly notice because it’s so hypnotic that it just kind of blends into your consciousness. I highly recommend checking out the rest of this record if you haven’t already. Despite a pretty standard loopacoupleofstolensamples formula, Hebden manages to squeeze out an album of worthwhile diversity.
